Start with the equipment and the market

There is no single universal document set for every retail device. A thermal label printer, an RFID reader, a point-of-sale terminal and a scale can have different electrical, radio, measurement or software characteristics. Their applicable obligations may therefore differ among the United States, European Union, EAEU/Russia and other markets.

A disciplined assessment starts with product classification, technical characteristics, country of placement and the role the equipment will play in the retail process.

Technical documentation and conformity assessment

Technical documentation typically records what the device is, how it is configured and which design or test information supports its use. Depending on the market, conformity assessment may involve safety, EMC, radio, metrology or other sector-specific considerations. Declarations and certificates should only be used where they fit the applicable route and evidence.

Safety, EMC and labeling

Retail electronics may be subject to electrical-safety and electromagnetic-compatibility considerations. Product labeling needs to present accurate identifiers and required information in the appropriate market context. These matters should be reviewed with the actual product documentation rather than inferred from a product family name alone.

Barcoding and product identification

Product identification is operational as well as documentary. Barcode labels, 1D and 2D codes and RFID identifiers help connect equipment, components or retail goods with records in a supply chain and store system. The identifier, label content and the supporting source data should agree.

Quality management

A quality-management system can help a manufacturer or service organization keep technical records, change control, supplier information and corrective processes organized. It is not a substitute for determining the product-specific regulatory path.
